LOWNDES CO., Ga. — Ian Brown’s mom is in the the U.S. Air Force and has been serving overseas for the past six months.
“He has no idea that she got home from her deployment about a week ago,” says Principal Bill Haskin at Lowndes Middle School.
It’s a secret TSgt. CheLeta Brown couldn’t wait to reveal.
She’s been deployed to Afghanistan for the past six months, but hasn’t seen her son since August.
“I missed him a lot,” says Brown. “This is the longest I’ve been away from him, so this was incredibly hard for me, but I thought about this moment the entire time I was over there.”
On Friday, around 900 students, including Ian, participated in games for Field Day.
As weeks of planning unfolded, the Principal escorted Brown to surprise her son in front of everyone at the school’s gymnasium.
“I am excited, nervous, and anxious. I can’t wait to see my son,” says Brown.
In the middle of playing a game, Ian suddenly sees his mom.
“I didn’t know what they were getting ready to do,” says Ian. “I just saw them bringing in signs and stuff, and then I saw military boots come through the door. I’m just the happiest person on earth.”
An emotional reunion the family, faculty, and students will remember for a lifetime.
