PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP — Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward has fired the top two chiefs in the city’s fire department.
Former Interim Chief Matt Schmitt and former Deputy Chief Joe Glover were already on paid leave when they were dismissed on Tuesday.
The Pensacola News Journal reports the firings followed a review of a 138-page report that detailed a dozen instances that demonstrated a lack of judgment, antagonism for Pensacola’s human resources department and poor leadership.
Acting Interim Chief David Allen was named fire chief.
Hayward says firing the chiefs was the toughest decision he’s made in six years as mayor. He says the report outlined the way they managed, which makes “you just lose confidence.”
