WASHINGTON (CBS News — A U.S. Secret Service officer shot a male suspect at about 3:15 p.m. outside the White House gates, CBS’ Jeff Pegues reports.

The man walked up to a White House checkpoint, raised a gun and pointed it at a uniformed Secret Service officer. The officer fired at him, and the man suffered critical injuries, according to Pegues, citing law enforcement sources.

The man was still alive and statements he made suggested that he had wanted to die, Pegues reports, in a kind of suicide-by-cop.

The suspect has been taken to George Washington University Hospital, a few blocks from the White House.

The shooting took place at 17th and E Streets, NW — near, but not inside the White House. The gun has been recovered, Pegues reports. Investigators have also swept the man’s vehicle.

The shooting triggered a lockdown there Friday afternoon immediately after the shooting, but it was lifted shortly after 4 p.m. ET.

Secret Service and local police also closed 17th Street between Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues for a brief time.

The president is not at the White House — he is currently golfing at Joint Base Andrews. Vice President Biden, however, was at the White House complex during the shooting, although his spokesperson says he was kept in a secure location.
