Suspect Charged with Murder in Monticello Shooting – New Posts 2016

MONTICELLO, Fla. — One man is dead and another is in custody following an early morning shooting in Monticello.

Monticello Police Chief Fred Mosley says officers and Jefferson County deputies responded to a report of gunfire in the area of 1st Street and Park Avenue around 3:47 a.m. Wednesday.

A deputy found a man at the scene and unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate him, but the victim was later pronounced dead by Jefferson County Fire Rescue. The victim had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

The Monticello Police Department has Identified the victim as 41-year-old Tommy Salter.

Witnesses were able to identify the suspect in the shooting as 31-year-old Antwain Devon Coates.

Witnesses say, early Wednesday morning, Salter and Coates got into an argument and Coates left to retrieve a gun. Witnesses say they saw Coates approach Salter with the gun saying that he was going to kill him.

After a gunshot rang out, a witness said they saw Coates leaving the scene and warning others not to say anything.

Wednesday, Coates turned himself in at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office where he was met by MPD investigators. Coates was charged with first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
