TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A suspected burglar is dead after he ran from police and into a pond west of downtown Tallahassee late Saturday night.
Tallahassee police officers say they responded to a reported burglary in the 600 block of West Virginia Street shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday.
Officers say they were speaking with the burglary victim, when the victim saw the suspect and pointed him out to authorities. When officers attempted to stop the suspect, they say he ran to Carter Howell Strong Park on West Georgia Street.
Police say after unsuccessfully attempting to taser the suspect, he dove into the pond at the park and began to swim away from the shore, ignoring police attempts to persuade him to return.
After authorities could not find the suspect by boat, deputies with a Leon County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Dive Team found the man’s body around 3:30 a.m. He was about 40 feet from the shoreline and eight feet under the surface, according to authorities.
Police say the man’s name will be released pending next of kin notification. The official cause of death will be released pending the results of an autopsy.
